The King’s Speech

Randy Newman, The King’s Speech, and More of 2011 Oscars
The Oscars was, a wee bit not what we all were expecting (oh we were expecting The King’s Speech to win anyways), it was quite, shortish and it felt a little more rushed than usual. Anne Hathaway was great as a hostess but Franco was a bit off. Still, it was nice seeing the stars all suited up and dressed up for the occasion. With big films like The Fighter, The Social Network, Inception, Black Swan etc. 2010 surely was a great year for films.

Nominated 20 times, Randy Newman celebrates his second win, for best song “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3. His last win was best song for Monsters, Inc., another Pixar film, where he has done six pictures. “I want to be good television so badly,” he says. “I’ve slowed the show down almost every time.” Newman challenges the Academy’s timer. “To hell with it!” he says.

Robert Downey Jr. gave Ricky Gervais a scathing retort for when the comedian poked fun at his past during the Golden Globes when in this latest Oscars Robert pretended to be annoyed with the Visual Effects nominees, the conversation with Jude Law are as follows: “It’s their moment. You know, if it wasn’t for them your closest association wait a superhero would have been in 2001. When you got busted in a cheap hotel with a woman dressed as Batgirl.”

Robert corrected him by replying: “Okay, first of all, that cheap hotel room cost $1250 with a corporate discount. Secondly, it was 2000 not 2001. And most importantly, she was dressed as Wonder Woman. And THAT attention to detail is what has won the respect of all the Academy voters for these fine men and women.” Thus the witty retort for Ricky Gervais.
